The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) along with several partners - Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries (MALF), The Chaguaramas Development Authority (CDA) and the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) - participated in the International Coastal Cleanup 2017 on the island of Chacachacare last Saturday (Saturday 16th September, 2017). Leading by example were the Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries (MALF), Senator the Honourable Clarence Rambarrat, his Parliamentary Secretary, Senator Avinash Singh and Mr. John Julien, Director of the EMA.

The four (4) participating agencies carried one hundred (100) volunteers to the island to partipate in this international event. Despite an earlier clean-up in March 2017, the volunteers collected one hundred and eight (108) bags of garbage that totalled to 491 kilograms (one thousand and eighty-three (1083) pounds). The dominant waste material on the island was plastic bottles of varying sizes.

The International Coastal Cleanup is recognised annually on the third Saturday of September, where coastal areas are not only cleaned, but information as it relates to discarded plastics, glass and general waste are collated and recorded.

The Environmental Management Authority expresses thanks to all participating agencies and volunteers for their efforts at raising public awareness and in demonstrating a commitment to a cleaner Trinidad and Tobago. The ICC event gives us a better understanding of our undesirable and unsustainable waste disposal behaviours and the need for change for the improvement of our environment.
