Chaguanas Borough Corporation launches its Volunteer Orientation Session

July 31st, 2017 Kent House, Maraval –On Saturday 29th July, 2017 the National Volunteer Network launched its first Orientation Session in the Borough of Chaguanas.

Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Senator the Honourable Haji Kazim Hosein joined with the Mayor of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, His Worship Alderman Gopaul Boodhan to officially welcome over 150 registered volunteers to the Chaguanas Volunteer Network.

The National Volunteer Network is a Cabinet-approved, Ministry-led initiative for the establishment of a Volunteer Network in every Municipality. Each Volunteer Network is aimed at improving and assisting the overall development of the burgesses through the collaborative efforts of its volunteers.

Mayor of the Chaguanas Borough Corporation His Worship Alderman Gopaul Boodhan, members of Council and Administration expressed their enthusiasm as one of the first Corporations to officially launch their Volunteer Network and host its Orientation Session. They commended the overwhelming support received from all NGOs, volunteer groups, members of the business community, youth, and residents that were present.

National Volunteer Coordinator, Mr. Matthew Kailah, in his message to those in attendance,reiterated the need to forgestrong community bonds saying, “Every effort counts and every person can add value to this beautiful country; one person cannot solve all the problems of this country but together we can definitely make strides in creating solutions.”

Honourable Minister Haji Kazim Hosein, encouraged Mayor Boodhan and his Council to do their best as servants of the people saying “Service to mankind is service to God”. He also reminded them that people generally want to give back but they don’t know how, “This is a golden opportunity for people to give back and we must lead the charge.”Minister Hosein urged volunteers to reach out to the homeless, less fortunate, elderly and those who need assistance saying “There’s a special joy in giving and likewise in receiving; Gratitude is important and we must have gratitude for everything in life.”

The Orientation Session concluded with a tree planting exercise where volunteers from the Civilian Conservation Corps, Voice of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and volunteer groups joined with the Honourable Minister Hosein and Mayor Gopaul Boodhan to complete their first volunteer exercise.

Residents are invited to join the Volunteer Network in their municipality, as we aim to make Trinidad and Tobago a safer, more close-knitted nation with the spirit of volunteerism.
