Member of Parliament for Mayaro, Rushton Paray is calling for a Lifeguard Patrol Unit to be set up along the coastline from Manzanilla to Mayaro and more lifeguards after four people drowned over the weekend.

In a release, Mr. Paray said there should be additional resources at the Manzanilla-Mayaro stretch to prevent these accidents, especially during the July/August vacation.

He is also calling on the Ministry of Tourism and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago to deploy additional resources in order to reduce the risk of future beach and sea fatalities especially in the peak of the vacation period.

On Sunday 13-year-old Ranesha Basdeo drowned after she went to wash her hands at the Mitan River, in Manzanilla. Her 50-year-old stepfather, Deoraj Harripersad tried to rescue her but he also perished.

In a second incident Morris Sammy and his nine-year-old granddaughter Anastacia Ali drowned while bathing in Mayaro on the beach near Coconut Drive.

Reports are that Sammy went into the water to save his granddaughter but also got into difficulty and drowned.

T&T Coast Guard officials confirmed that the bodies of Renisha Basdeo and stepfather, Deoraj Harridass, washed ashore on Monday, about one mile from where they disappeared in the waters off on Sunday.
