A Caribbean Airlines flight to New York from St. Vincent had to turn around and head to Port of Spain after a bird struck the airplane on Thursday.

The Boeing 737-800 was bound for JFK International Airport from St. Vincent.

CAL says its flight crew followed the standard operating procedures, and the aircraft returned safely to Piarco International Airport where it was taken out of service for maintenance by the airline's engineers.

No emergency landing was declared.

The passengers on flight BW 552 were re-accommodated on a later service to New York.
