The measures being taken by the police and Government to mitigate against crime in the vacation period will be effective. So says Criminologist Dr. Randy Seepersad. He says a higher police presence in the malls will work. He also notes that the Stop and Search initiative has proven useful all over the world.

In opposition to the calls for a state of emergency Dr. Seepersad explains why this process would be ineffectual.

He goes on to say that the most helpful tool for combating crime is hitting it at its embryo stage. Dr. Seepersad refers to using programmes to enhance good parenting and interventions at the school and community level to prevent young ones from setting off into the world of crime.
