The Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) is making moves to transform dumping sites, from messy and odorous, to a clean and sanitary semi-aerobic landfill structure using the Fukuoka Sanitary Landfill method, which is the typical landfill method in Japan.

On Thursday a regional seminar and on-site training was held in Trinidad. The method was designated by the United Nations as an effective technique for mitigating global warming.

QHSE manager of SWMCOL, Maria Allong, explained how the method works.

The project is funded by the Japan-CARICOM Friendship and Co-operation Fund and Japan International Co-operation Agency and is in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat and the Caribbean Public Health Agency.

Miss Allong said the project will be implemented at the Guanapo landfill.
