There's currently only one person employed in the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services to help with the socially displaced.

This from Permanent Secretary, Jacinta Bailey-Sobers.

She told a Joint Select Committee on Social Services and Public Administration that the Ministry needs between 15 to 30 social workers.

PS Bailey-Sobers said the staff count was needed based on a committee recommendation and interviews should be held over the next two months to fill the vacant posts.

The new staff will be contract workers making it easier for the ministry to do any hiring.

Meanwhile, the Ministry said its goal was to get 20% of homeless persons off the streets annually to the centres currently available in San Fernando and Port-of-Spain.

The Director of the Social Displacement Unit at the Ministry, Loraine Reyes-Borel, said while this was a clearly stated goal they faced issues, not with finding places for the 20%, but instead with physically moving persons off the street.
