Vasant Bharath has called for a public debate with Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Mr. Bharath is challenging the Siparia MP for Political Leadership of the UNC in this month's election.

In a letter which was released to the media, he said, "I am inviting you to participate in a public debate...in your own words, 'manos y manos' to discuss the following important matters:

- Plans for rebuilding the UNC as a national party and regaining public trust.
- Lessons learnt from having suffered five successive national defeats and converting that knowledge into victory at the next election.
- Engaging other political participants outside of the UNC base, in a sincere, meaningful and sustainable way.
- Plans for restructuring the Trinidad and Tobago economy to combat the various economic and social issues facing us."

Mr. Bharath said should the Siparia MP be unable to facilitate a televised debate, he would be willing to debate her at the next UNC Monday Night Forum at the St. Helena Hindu Primary School.
