The active threat against prison officers' lives was made clear by the Commissioner of Prisons, William Alexander, on Monday.

He and the Commissioner of Police, Stephen Williams, briefed the public about discussions currently taking place to deal with the problem at the level of the National Security Council, and including the Attorney General and the Chief of Defence Staff.

Mr. Alexander also revealed that the family of a prison officer had received the State Compensation Grant of $1 million.

This, as it was determined that he had died in the line of duty.

The Grant is meant as a compassionate payment to the loved ones of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their job.
