Atiba Gorkin, 35, will appear before a Port of Spain magistrate on Monday charged with manslaughter. According to information from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Gorkin was charged last night with the drowning death of his son, Josiah Messi Gorkin.

The 3-year-old went missing at Williams Bay, Chaguaramas on July 16th and was discovered dead the next day. When Messi went missing around 5 pm on July 16, his family members initially feared he had been kidnapped. Shortly after 6 am the following day, Messi's body was found floating in the waters off Pier 1.

An autopsy conducted at the Forensic Science Complex, St James, revealed the toddler died from drowning. His lungs were filled with water. Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard on Saturday gave instructions to charge the relative with manslaughter.
