Over half a million dollars have been handed out in fines to speeding motorists.

This was revealed by Acting Superintendent of the TTPS Highway Division, Mathura Singh, at the Weekly Police Press Briefing on Wednesday.

He said most of the speed tickets were issued at night and most of the violations were detected on the highways.

"To date, 577 traffic tickets have been issued to motorists for breaching the road speed limits violations, totaling $577,000 in fines."

Acting Superintendent Singh said there's been a 50% reduction in road fatalities and credits the speed guns for saving lives.

"A comparison of 2015/2016 data reveals a 53% reduction in road traffic deaths for the month of May 2016. In all, 15 persons lost their lives in May 2015 when compared to seven for May 2016."
