GMTT - TTEITI Publishes 4th Report

The Trinidad and Tobago Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (TTEITI) has published its fourth report. This year’s report contains recommendations on improving government’s audit and assurance processes, and improving revenue collection among other pertinent energy related information.

Having many portfolios including that of Minister, MP, father, husband and now vying for the post of PNM Youth Officer, Darryl Smith says “You only have one life to live and time is going, so we need to do ensure the young persons that’ll be taking over will have a bright future.” Which Smith says he’s here to assist with. The man with many hats believes young people are the country’s greatest resource.

“The way the structure is set up, our hands are tied” that the words of the President of the T&T Petroleum Dealers Association, Robindranath Naraynsingh, on the recent decision to accept cash only for fuel.

Acknowledging that accepting cash only is an inconvenience for the public Naraynsingh says it’s an inconvenience for the dealers as well.

"The decision was the right one" that was the response of Attorney at Law Peter Taylor when asked his thoughts on the Lifesport audit being dropped.

Mr. Taylor says persons involved can now "walk with their heads held high" as justice has been served and their rights vindicated.

The petroleum dealers' cash only stance at gas stations may have arisen out of the increase in the Business Levy and the Green Fund Levy. So says former Energy Minister Kevin Ramnarine.

Ramnarine says dealers profitability are "wafer thin/negative" and that dealers are looking at ways to cut costs and keep their businesses open. He says the dealers' profit margins have not changed in almost 12 years.

Member of the PRO Committee of the T&T Medical Association has described the fabricated story of an intern at the Port of Spain General Hospital as confusing and embarrassing. The intern initially said that she was robbed at gunpoint on the hospital's compound but later recanted her statement.

Dr. Austin Trinidade says "some good things" have come out of the false report though. Indicating that relevant parties met and agreed to have security beefed up at the nation's health institutions.

Although he's yet to be sworn in as president of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA), Lynsley Doodhai has already begun to address issues affecting schools. One such issue is the infrastructural problems facing some of the newly built schools. Mr Doodhai is expected to be sworn in next Tuesday.
